Most water meters have numbers representing how many gallons of water have passed through them since they were originally installed by the water department.

Step one: Record the current numbers that are on the water meter face.

If your meter is like the one in the picture above, The red indicator bar will spin around like a clock hand. Indicating 10 individual gallons with one complete revolution of the hand. Mark the current number.

Step two: Fill a five gallon bucket with water .

or [five one gallon jugs] =5 gallons

Step three; Read the current water meter numbers to confirm that you used exactly five gallons of water.

If yes; your water meter is working correctly

If no; Contact your water company to report a broken meter
